Ring in the Year of the Tiger the right way

Looking for an auspicious start to the Year of the Tiger? You can't go wrong with any of these four dinners. (Unless you start hitting the baijiu.) Families traditionally have their big dinners on the eve of the new year (Feb. 13) so plan ahead.

-Year of the Tiger Celebration at T'ang Court: Ring in the Year of the Tiger with one of two different set menus at the Langham’s T’ang Court this month. Enjoy drinks from the complimentary cocktail bar before sitting down with friends and family for Chinese delicacies like steamed prawns, double-boiled turtle soup and “pot of rice with eight treasures”. ¥4,980 for a table of 10 (plus 15 percent surcharge).

-Welcome in the New Year at Emerald Garden: Join Emerald Garden’s Chef Feng for a New Year’s feast. He’ll be cooking up a range of classically Cantonese dishes for you over the New Year holiday, so head down and bring your family. ¥488-688 (plus surcharge).

-An Auspicious Chinese New Year at Spectrum: Celebrate the Chinese New Year at the Millennium Hongqiao's premier Chinese restaurant. Featuring Cantonese cuisine with a Shanghainese flair, this promises to be a popular dinner. Book by the table. RMB2988 / 10 person table plus drinks.

-Chinese New Year Set Menus at the Park Hyatt: Celebrate your Chinese New Year at the top of the city on the 86th floor of the Park Hyatt. They’ll be featuring traditional Chinese cuisine in their “Chinese Private Rooms”, helping you to ring in the New Year in good form with dishes like shark’s fin soup, steamed leopard garoupa and king prawns.

Thanks for the heads up Geoff! Especially about the surcharge most restaurants like to add on at this time of year. Any restaurant that starts charging for service in Shanghai better have learned some enormous secret about how to train local waiters and waitresses, or they're capitalising on the influx of customers at this time of year. Either way: Happy Hu Year!
