Shanghai's Tastiest Green Curries

Duncan Rickelton is a man who loves his curry. Check out his three top recommendations for green curry in Shanghai:

Thai | Naam Thai If you like your Thai green curry with ambient beats and a Zen-meets-mod interior, this is the place. For green curry freaks like us, the velvety, ecstasy inducing curry sauce is worth the ¥72 on its own, although small amounts of the meat leave the curry thin. It’s best soaked up with a buttery roti (¥8) or some brown rice (¥12), which even comes in a coconut-leaf dunce’s hat. Find It Shop 1107-1108, Highstreet Loft, 508 Jiashan Lu 嘉善路508号尚街1107-1108商铺, Tel: 5465-6005

Thai | Simply Thai During a lazy lunch hour, we’ll head to this Thai institution for a green curry eating session. We love eating this generous portion of curry (¥60) at Simply Thai Dongping Lu’s backyard garden while the restaurant’s soothing soundtrack interweaves with trumpety lilts from the nearby music school. More harmonious still are the flavors on the plate: this great curry is full of sweet red and green peppers, peas, pumpkin and shredded chicken breast. Fragrant jasmine rice for curry slathering is ¥6. Find It Multiple Locations, www.simplythai-sh.com

Thai | Baan Thai A mere ¥55 (plus ¥8 for rice) affords the elegant ambiance of this restaurant’s mansion setting in addition to the delicious curry. Baan Thai’s signature curry is admittedly less substantial than our other choices, but the serving still boasts plump, juicy eggplant chunks and plenty of succulent white and dark meat chicken. It’s a great deal considering the price point of this restaurant. Don’t fear the three chilies on the menu either–this curry is no monster. Find It 1479 Fuxing Zhong Lu 复兴中路1479号, Tel: 6433-6955
