While the upcoming Shanghai Tower won’t be the world’s tallest super skyscraper, it will still be setting records. Estimated to tower over the Pudong skyline in 2014, Shanghai Tower will be 121 storeys or 632 meters high according to a report by China Daily. That puts it in second place in the world behind the dizzyingly high Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The Shanghai Tower J Hotel, a new brand of Jin Jiang Hotels, will occupy the 84th to 110th floors. By comparison, the Armani Hotel (yes, they have hotels now) in the Burj only has rooms as high as the 39th floor. The current challenger for highest hotel belongs to the Park Hyatt on the 79th to 93rd floors of the Shanghai World Financial Center, which is soon to be shamed by the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, which will occupy the top 16 floors of the 118 storey International Commerce Centre in 2011. Although occupying a lower numbered floor, the J Hotel will actually be higher from the ground than the Ritz-Carlton.

While the J Hotel appears to be holding on to its title, don’t expect to the Shanghai Tower to stay king of the hill, even on its home turf. To the joy of long elevator ride enthusiasts worldwide, Chinese financial titan Ping An Insurance is currently building the even taller Ping An International Financial Center in Shenzhen, estimated to be finished 2015.

Would you want to stay the night 574.5 meters above Shanghai?

Aren't all the tall buildings being erected just making up for something lacking in another area?
