While the global financial crisis exacts a toll on the world markets, Shanghai's expressways are exacting the usual highway tolls on Shanghai drivers--electronically. Electronic toll collection is now being introduced in Shanghai and the Yangtse River Delta region. Nearly 30 percent of the city's toll booths have been outfitted so far. Tags for cars, which can be installed in the top corner of the windshield, and the toll card (similar to the transit cards we all know and love) go for RMB430. You can expect traffic flows through toll booths to start speeding up noticeably in a few years when a significant portion of drivers (particularly transport companies, shipping, etc.) enroll in the program.
