Whether you’re a serious rugby fanatic, a casual sports fan, or just looking for an excuse to drink copious amounts of beer on a Saturday morning, the Rugby World Cup is the event for you. No matter that this year’s tournament takes place in New Zealand, there are plenty of places right here in Shanghai to take in all the action. Here are some of our best bets:
The Shed: Looking for a comfy spot with cheap, quality beer to watch the games and while away your weekend? The Shed starts the action off at 3:30pm on Friday and then keeps the good times rolling with Saturday's live action and an awesome Sunday brunch deal. RMB100 gets you all you can eat brunch plus free-flow coffee 11am-4pm. Don't miss out on the raffle prizes and beer deals.
Bubba's: Bubba's would give almost any BBQ joint in the world a run for its money. We suggest you get there early for this weekend's games because they're offering free draft beers until the first point are scored (at the Hongqiao and Expo Village locations). Plus, on Sunday there will be free shots if America beats Ireland in the game starting at 2pm. USA! USA! USA!
O’Malley’s: Ever the haven for sports lovers and Irishmen alike, O’Malley’s promises to show every minute of the excitement starting with Friday’s opening ceremonies at 3:30pm. (The first game featuring New Zealand vs. Tonga begins at 4:30pm.) You can pay RMB350 for access to their VIP area on the upstairs terrace, which includes open bar and free snack foods all night.
Big Bamboo: Shanghai’s consummate sports bar, true to its reputation, promises to show every game over the next seven weekends, culminating with the William Webb Ellis Trophy Final on Sunday October 23rd. Each of their three locations will be giving out 50 free beers during Friday’s opening ceremony, so get their early and get ready for a raucous seven weeks.
The Camel: This FFC mainstay has become the go-to spot for many a sports fan for a reason. It’s spacious, has comfy seating, decent food, and lots of beer. Oh, and they play pretty much all sports, all the time.
glo London: It might not be your first thought of places to watch the games, but glo has a nice rooftop and lounge area where you can enjoy some (semi) fresh air while taking in the action. Plus, they’ll be serving breakfast during all the morning games.
The Spot: Though they’re not promising any special promotions during the event, The Spot always seems to be having some sort of happy hour going on. 25RMB on standard drinks Monday-Friday 11am-8pm and 4-8pm on weekends. 2-for-1 on Tiger drafts.
