Formed in San Diego, California in 1984, garage rock quintet The Morlocks made a name for themselves in the mid 80s by kickin’ out brash tunes and raucous sets. Led by erratic frontman Leighton Koizumi, The Morlocks were signed to Epitaph records in 1986 for the release of their Submerged Alive LP, before disbanding in 1987 due to ongoing troubles within the band. After reforming in 2006, with Koizumi as the only holdover from the original lineup, and touring Europe in 2007, The Morlocks are coming to Shanghai’s Yuyintang on May 7th, and in advance of their China tour Koizumi and Nic “The Canadian” Jodoin sat in for “8 Questions with . . . “

City Weekend: How did this whole China tour come together? What was your first reaction when you found out you were coming to China?

Nic Jodoin: We've been talking with Abe [Deyo] for a while about setting up something and it just suddenly fell in place. We feel pretty lucky to be coming over to play.

CW: Can you describe your sound and list some key influences?

Leighton Koizumi: Loud, dirty in-your-face ass-rock, influences: Stones, Stooges, Kinks, Grace Jones.

CW: What's been your favorite country to play? Do you have any good road anecdotes you can share?

LK: Italy; too explicit for your readers.

NJ: Italy's good and France's becoming pretty Rock n' Roll too. Germany's a little weird; we once got pulled over by 2 German bears in a tinny BMW waiving a "Halte" (Stop) sign out off the drivers' window. They were cops but don't think there chaps were standard uniform.

CW: What's THEE craziest thing you've seen or done on the road?

LK: Once I saw a bus full of Senior Citizens drive off a Mountain.

CW: Aside from instruments, what's the one thing you need to bring on every tour?

LK: Baby wipes and passport

CW: What's your go-to track for every live set?

LK:We don't have a "Go to" list, we use a GPS.

NJ: Leighton’s rants... We just loop it.

CW: What can Chinese fans expect from The Morlocks?

LK: Something they have never experienced

NJ: A lot of shit talking and while we tune our guitars

CW: After China, what's up next for The Morlocks? What are your ultimate hopes for the band?

The Morlocks: To conquer the world, duh!
