Black Eyed Peas - Charity Show Last Night

Can I say something gay? I mean, really really gay. I almost told my friend Paul last night and then I thought better of it because I thought he might think I was gay...ok, I'll say it - but I'm not gay. At least not with you.

Last night I got an invite to the private charity show put on by Chivas with Karen Mok and The Black Eyed Peas. Only 700 were invited, Linus and the boys did a great job of raising the floor so we didn't have to sit like we did for Sonic Youth and everyone got close enough to see if Fergie would pee herself again and as they always do, the BEP put on a great show, but then...oh, I even feel a little gay saying this.

They did 'Where Is The Love' and it...ahem, was...erm...oh f*ck it, it was moving.

There, I said it. It was very touching. Everyone, even the government official above us in his shirt and tie was waving his arms and it felt...well, nice. Even as they walked off stage The Dutchess had a few words for the crowd and knew enough about the earthquake to comment on it and we all walked out of the show feeling like we had done...at least something, even if it was freeloading a ticket and loads of whiskey.

Ugh. See you at Club Deep.

it would appear that despite CW claiming to be gay-friendly, they still let people like you work for them... maybe you should spend some time on CW's LGBeat blog instead of taking cheap shots at homos and perpetuating negative stereotypes.

god - you don't do much for dismissing the stereotype of ya'll having no sense of humor now, do you?

let me guess - you got upset at the 42 Below 'Gay Vodka' ad:

Relax - play some softball or something.

agh! It just hit me that when you said 'At least I don't have Bund envy' I should have said 'At least I don't have Pearl Tower envy', oh, that would have been funny.

moment's gone now, I admit - but sheesh, that would have been great.

So, only the "elite" - surely not - 700 got to see them. I hear that they will be back - well Rocky rock will - on 21st June at Attica. So you can take your revenge on 42Below by drinking it!

'elite'? I'd say half of them.

the other half were, well, folks like myself with elite friends.

Sorry darling, not familiar with the "sense of humor failure" stereotype, it is oh so very difficult to keep track of them all, lucky we have you to remind us...

I am a tad surprised however that despite your propensity for acerbic comments (yes, comments, not wit) would forget (my personal fav) 'stereotype' - the Gay Mafia...

Hope you never get to find out if that one has any truth to it...

meanwhile I am doing a great job of suggesting a new stereotype - "lesbian who can't type"...

Fair point - having top friends clearly has its benefits - glad they were good. And as for the 42Below ad it is so non-homophobic that it should be madatory in all schools.

I'm afraid that last post of yours made as much sense as your alls argument that 'girls can have sex'. Don't get me wrong, it had a lot of big words that I'm sure you'll get loads of high-fives from the gals next Tuesday bowling night, but if you're so keen on making the Gay and Lesbian Scene work here, comment more over there.

In this post alone, you've commented as much as you have there altogether.

'Fagtastic' you can use, but a joke about feeling teary during a pop song and you get all lumberjack on me?

Am sure you have a lot to offer the scene, don't be a parody.

lets try that again shall we...

I am a tad surprised however, that despite your propensity for acerbic comments (yes, comments, not wit), you would forget my favorite 'stereotype' - the Gay Mafia...

Hope you never get to find out if that one has any truth to it...

don't tell me you have issues with lumberjacks now too...

are you going to start making fun of the chinese people next?

oooh, what about being gay and chinese?

no doubt you have a pre-prepared set of offensive quips about them too...

nope - just people like you who spend more time trying to witch hunt then actually making the current situation better.

Whoa. I'm stepping in here. For the record, we didn't like the way Aric used the word "gay" and I'm probably going to dig a deeper hole here, but we gave Aric the benefit of the doubt (he deserves) and attributed his admittedly insensitive reference to "gay" as more sappy than offensive. That's probably because we know Aric. We also thought that Liminalspace's reply was more tongue n' cheek than derogatory. However, it's also offensive to tell someone to "go suck a c$%k". Aric's offense is understandable.

Still, please make peace Aric. We know that you're are far from being anything but a "gay basher". Liminalspace had the courage to take offense and besides asking you to "suck c%k" has comported their self well in the ensuing volley afterwards. You're both probably very cool and actually would get along, rather than fight like this.

fair enough - if my comments came across as 'anti-gay' then I apologize. many can tell you that after a couple of glasses of port, I'm anything but close minded to this particular lifestyle.

I still stick to my argument that instead of telling those to suck another man's pee-pee, that effort could be put into building the scene, but I'm also honest enough to say it went on longer than it should and it's 50% my fault.

Aric - may I suggest you do your research before you start accusing people of witch hunting.

I put more than my fair share of effort into building the queer scene in the Jing and greater China...

I co-founded and run the Queer Beijing (QBJ) network.

We liase and coorperate with a large number of the queer/glbt-etc groups in China and around the world.

However, we are in particularly close contact with the various queer crews in BJ, SH and HK both socially and organisationally.

We do a lot of cross-promotion for events and activities etc targeted at the queer and queer friendly community including helping spread the word about Gays.com - recently launched by SH's very own fagtastic fashion designer and homoextrodinare Kevin of Manifesto.

I personally host two free weekly queer events (neither of which I make any money from), Thursday night its "Queeressence @White Rabbit" and Sunday night we do "Queer Sundays @Club Obiwan".

Queer Beijing collects 10% of drink sales from our Sunday event - which we then donating to gay people and causes in need of funds in China.

Because that wasn't yet enough for me, 2 weeks ago I volunteered to design and develop a website for QAFBJ/Tongzhi Yi Fan Ren to better showcase Season 2 of this brilliant, groundbreaking Beijing-filmed and produced bi-monthly gay lifestyle tv show.

I am also in the process of organizing the debut screening of QAFBJ at a number of gay pride festivals around the world.

I was recently interviewed about the gay scene in Beijing and China for: Out Magazine (American gay magazine), Tetu (French gay+les magazine), Winq (Dutch gay magazine), ABC News (USA) and filmed for QAFBJ...

So maybe, just maybe, I know a thing or two about what a homophobic comment looks like and am more than a little tired of it...

Thought we were making nice - was talking about comments here.

I applaud anyone here trying to do something different.

Collin, you're quite right - in all fairness, I should not have suggested your blogger go suck male genitals and I do apologize for this.

However, I do not apologize for being offended by Aric's use of the word "gay".

As an employee of CW and a journalist, it was totally inappropriate to make fun of gay people for the sake of a cheap laugh.

By proceeding to then calling me "butch" and bringing up a number of lesbian stereotypes - playing softball, bowling, having no sense of humor (this was a new one even for me) and being like a lumberjack was outright offensive and reeked of homophobia.

Possibly the most offensive comment of the lot however was - "I'm afraid that last post of yours made as much sense as your alls argument that 'girls can have sex'. ".

Exactly HOW is this to be construed as anything other than HOMOPHOBIC?

2 months, 3 weeks ago

If I offended you as a person, I'm okay with that as it sounds like you and I might not be keeping Windows open anytime soon.

If I offended you as a homosexual, I apologize.

Again, I'm sorry that CW failed to act soon enough to prevent this thread from turning into one ad hominem attack after another.

The entire point of this blog forum is so that readers can voice their respectful opinions. I would delete the offending comments you rightfully point out, however, I think they now serve to support your arguments and have stoked a useful discussion about the very narrow boundaries of appropriately using the word "gay".

We're proud that CW was the first English magazine in Shanghai to offer a permanent column to cover the LGBT scene. We are committed to a fair and balanced approach to all community issues and again I'm sorry that the article gave you the impression that we are off course in that aim. We will delete any future comments that are disrespectfully directed at a user and not the issue under discussion.

Can we all just get along???

anyhow...here is one to promote the LGBT scene. DJ PETE FARRIS will be at Attica this Sunday June 8th.

http://www.facebook.com/wall.php?id=640622616#/event.php?eid=20398612322

I hear he is great and very talented. Also popular in the LGBT scene. He is the resident DJ at ARQ, the best gay club in Sydney.

it should be a fun night there at Attica!

ironic that this whole post was about 'Where Is The Love', ha ha ha.

in all fairness, this town [and Beijing] lacks people with passion and, although it might be a while before she and I are Facebook buddies, I do respect someone knowing who they are and what they want to do.

I'll be out of the city this weekend, or would show up to support.
