Formed in June 2009, Duck Fight Goose is already charging ahead on their tour to prep for their first EP, which drops in November. Lead singer Han Han tells us what makes their sound different from all the other new bands popping out from the Shanghai scene.
Can you describe your sound?
It’s complex and different from traditional sounds. It’s not too cerebral. Psychedelic rock and bebop jazz are key to our music.
Explain your motto: “The universe will be saved by animals.”
We are animals and I hope we can save the universe of music in Shanghai, even in China, which is dominated by mainstream, boring stuff. But the truth is they are too powerful. People dominate the universe, they are standing at the top of the food chain.
You recently played in Beijing, Nanjing and Chengdu. What is your favorite place to play?
Shanghai is still our favorite. I believe this city needs new sounds and, to be more specific, new sounds from a new community of musicians. When we play in some cities, many people have “WTF” written on their faces. Beijing is the second choice–the audience there is awesome. But the food in Chengdu really makes me crazy. It’s so amazing.
What do you have planned for your upcoming show at MAO Livehouse?
A nice VJ will play some clips from our favorite movie from Hong Kong, The Imposter, which was made in 1975. The lead role has seven faces and costumes, and no one in the movie can recognize him as the same person, even though all his faces look the same. It’s the sort of weird metaphor we like.
