It's been a minute since Shanghai's had a heavy dose of punk rock, and after a weekend silenced by observance and another tamed by eclecticism, sh!t's about to get right.
The festivities get underway tomorrow night, Wednesday, October 21st, when Yuyintang hosts a special rendition of their New Faces night, featuring Korean-based Ssighborggg and local upstarts Rainbow Danger Club. While the former is pushing electronic jams and the latter sounds like a homage to risque gay sex, the free entry is certainly punk friendly, and seriously, it's Wednesday, so take what you can git.
On Thursday, as usual, everyone's favorite scumbag, Sacco leads the punk-rock charge over at Not Me with his weekly Heart Attack, peddling RMB 15 draughts and crusty punk classics.
Then, on Friday, October 23rd, things get serious. Although Yuyintang is hosting Cross Culture, a Layabozi-sponsored showcase featuring Boys Climbing Ropes, Dovetail Joints, Duck Fight Goose and Weghur, the show of the night, and the weekend for that matter, is over at Mao Livehouse, where Beijing skinheads Misandao, Early Bus and Hell City will tear up the immaculate stage with their raw and rugged punk jams. In addition to this triumvirate of capital-based bands, this gig will mark the final appearance of the current Mortal Fools lineup, before drummer Tim Anderson amicably parts ways with the 70s punk-revivalist outift. If you've yet to catch the MoFos in action, RMB 50 is easily worth one glorious parting glimpse.
Saturday shows no signs of slowing down, when a garage-a-trois of bands, led by local cover supremacists The Snots, rip up LOgO for Trash a Gogo, FREE of charge. Expect Little Richard on speed, The Who on meth, Screaming Lord Such on blood and Chuck Berry under every toilet in the ladies room. If amped up covers ain't your thing, there's always the second installment of Badtastic over at Not Me.
Sunday is the lord's day, thus punk rockers world wide will collectively bow their heads and praise Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee, but not so much Marky . . .
