Shanghai’s still abuzz from last month’s Maybe Mars showcase at MAO Livehouse, and before the ringing in your ears can even subside, Maybe Mars are coming right back at you with a sequel on February 27th: Independent China in Stereo; featuring Carsick Cars, Wuhan dance punks AV Okubo, Guai Li and Birdstriking, the former two playing their final show before heading the Austin’s South by Southwest.

“We hope to have our bands down [in Shanghai] either individually or in groups every other month or so,” explains Maybe Mars creative team lead Nevin Domer. “[To create] a healthy scene, bands need to tour and they need to cross-pollinate with other scenes.”

While CsC, AVO and Guai Li have all made regular trips to Shanghai in the past 14 months, Independent China in Stereo, presented by S.T.D., will be the first local appearance for Birdstriking, a college-age, “Beijing Generation Six” band, who make no attempt to hide their adoration for Zhang Shouwang and Carsick Cars, following the CsC formula of open-string and noisy guitar licks and a-tonal vocals spot on.

Although Birdstriking are not officially signed to Maybe Mars, Domer hints at their participation in an upcoming compilation, along with other similarly-aged bands like Rustic, Flyx and Old Fashion.

Although no release date has been set for the pending generation six compilation, Domer adds that Independent China in Stereo will be the first time AV Okubo’s highly anticipated The Greed of Man will be available for purchase in Shanghai, and, as usual states that the showcase “should be good, not just for the label, but for both the local Shanghai and Beijing scenes.”
