Local Artist Watch: Expendable

Featuring members of The Mortal Fools and Boys Climbing Ropes, and led by the author of the most comprehensive Shanghai rock-scene blog, Andy Best, Expendable is a brand new addition to the local rock/punk/indie contingent.

Conceived as a recording-only outfit, Expendable plays a breed of heavy rock, fused with fuzz-metal riffs and politically-tinged punk lyrics. It is still unclear whether the group has any clear intentions on playing live, but they have recently been under the tutelage of local producer/promoter/effects guru Brad Ferguson, who is manning the knobs of the band's debut Choose Your Own Heroes.

Although Expendable won't be hitting the stage anytime soon, this weekend's live music offerings are dominated by the foreign set, as some French dude name Dantes who sings Chinese pop songs is releasing an album at Yuyintang on Friday, June 5th. Rather than editorialize (you can check him out on Youku and make you're own opinion, I'll be at the Bananas Prom Night), fast forward to Sunday, June 7th, when former Shanghai blues-rock stalwarts The Cardinals return to the Melting Pot (Taikang Lu) stage for their final curtain call, supported by The Dovetail Joints, and featuring 2-for-1 drinks.

In the middle of doing another eight songs and then a more permanent line up will be formed for shows. On the same topic ... Boys Climbing Ropes have started work on their next EP and if it rocks as much as the first one we should all look out for it.
