Anyone that's been paying attention to the blogosphere for the past several weeks has read the heated debate raised over SOMA records takeover of the Zhijiang Dream Factory.

The new deal, which grants SOMA exclusive weekend rights to the Dream Factory space also comes with a lucrative catch: the label has outfitted the room with a brand new PA, one which they've valued at RMB 1.2 million (although that number seems a bit extreme . . . receits please).

After a number of recent visits to the Yuyao Lu venue, it has become quite clear that the space is in serious need of a sonic revamp, and this Friday, May 8th, SOMA unveils their "state of the art" sound system, with the commencement of their SOMA Live series, the inaugural show featuring Beijing goth-rock mega-star and snazzy dresser Muma, and his band Third Party.

While opinions of Muma vary (he was really big like 5 years ago still has a legion of nostalgic fans), this will be a great tester of the new sound, although not the best barometer of the venue's staying power, as kick-off shows are usually met with unduly fanfare.

The following night, on Saturday, May 9th, local promotion wiz kids S.T.D. will brave the cold as the first independent promoters to use the Dream Factory space under new management, when Beijing punk all-stars, and Public Enemy collaborators, Brain Failure invade the New Factories, supported by The Mushrooms and, quite oddly I must say, Cold Fairyland. This show is certain to be slammed w/ young Shanghainese, but the real question will be if SOMA allows other promoters use of their pricey gear.

These are just a few options for a week laden with rad punk rock shows, but if neither show suits your fancy, and you're curious to see the best frontwomen in China, the SUBS and the charismatic Kang Mao will be stopping by Yuyintang, tomorrow, May 6th, while Nanjing-via-Beijing hardcore superstars Overdose and hotter-than-ever screamer Ruan Ruan hit the YYT stage with tourmates Fanzui Xiangfa on Saturday, May 9th.

"Take that one to heart . . ."
