By now, the pending closure of everyone’s favorite dive, LOgO, on October 31st is old news. Other media outlets have publicly announced the unfortunate reality, while adoring patrons have been flocking to Xingfu Lu in droves to pay their respects to a place that seems to be as beloved as any other Shanghai institution in recent memory.
Yes there is talk of a new bar/venue opening as soon as management can find an appropriate location, and LOgO’s regular rotation of reggae, electro, hip hop and the occasional rock show will have an immediate home at sister venue Lune, but naturally there is no way to truly replace this revered locale.
However, let’s not overstate the implications of this unfortunate closure, let’s not liken LOgO’s closure to a death and mourn, and become angry at decisions that are beyond our control . . . nothing is permanent. Instead, let’s use the next 10 nights to celebrate a time and a place that no licensing board, irate neighbors, or disgruntled bao’an can take away, and enjoy the last days of LOgO.
Of course many of us have some great memories inside the bar’s grimy confines, many local promoters, DJs and bands can trace their humble beginnings to LOgO’s beer-drenched-and stenched environs, and, I for one, can map out the majority of my existence in Shanghai: Punks for Monks, The Rogue Transmission, Get in the Van, Mod Dance Party and The Fever Machine; to 13 Xingfu Lu. It is indeed a shame that the bar has to close, but LOgO's unsavory legacy can never be tarnished.
What entails is the line-up for LOgO’s final week. The bar has already announced that on their final night of operation, October 31st, they will host an all-star jam session for local musos, combined with a who’s-who of local DJs. Please feel free to share your favorite LOgO memories here, and, of course, make one final visit sometime this week to remember a golden era of Shanghai nightlife.
