It’s officially freezing outside, so if you’re anything like me, all you want is something hot and tasty delivered to your door. Here are three tummy-warming delivery options for eating in this winter.
Brasa Chicken: I ordered a Personal Combo (¥38) and a chicken salad (¥35) from Eduardo Vargas’ newest food venture. My herb-rubbed quarter chicken was juicy and plenty flavorful even without dipping it in the green sauce (parsley, lemon, garlic, spices) or the red sauce (red pepper, garlic, spices).
The combo included tasty skin-on garlic fries (still hot upon delivery) and a small green salad. It was a generous meal for such a low price. The chicken salad was equally satisfying–plenty of big chicken chunks, tomatoes, carrot, onion and Boston lettuce with a mild garlic dressing. Local delivery is free, city-wide for a fee.
Yi Fang Zhou (Tel: 6433-7966): The Cantonese have perfected the transformation of soupy boiled rice into an ambrosial dish: rice congee (zhou). A well-made zhou comes swimming with fragrant umami flavors and is a winter comfort food for anyone sick, tired or just freezing. At Yi Fang you pick your zhou flavor from five seafood and meat bases plus a selection of 17 seafoods and meats charged by the half-kilo. The black fish base with added clams (around ¥100 for a two to three person serving) is thick with meaty fish slices and chewy clam meat. They don’t skimp on any of the premium ingredients (and they shouldn’t at this price).
My zhou came to my door piping hot. The ideal addition is a salted duck egg, so if you don’t have a stock at home, order a few (three for ¥10). Crack the top of the egg, scoop it out with your chopsticks and mix it into your zhou. Five branches deliver locally for free, but you have to order in Mandarin.
La Casbah: This modest spot boasts my favorite Greek salad (¥28). The creamy, soft, almost melty feta is briny but not overly salty. The pizzas are nothing like what you’d get in a premium Italian place, but they’re not trying for anything more than thin crust, zesty sauce and a decent coating of mozzarella. The spinach pizza features a big pile of fresh leaves baked until just wilted. The sandwiches (I like the roast beef, ¥28) on wholegrain, panini or focaccia are filling, with lots of fresh veggies included. Three branches, two in Puxi, one in Pudong, deliver locally for free.
