Sooooo, KK lovers, KK fanatics, those willing to wait, slobbering, in long lines for a single, hot, sticky, sugar-party-in-your-mouth Original Glazed: who can tell me where I spotted this holy sign, pictured above? I took this snapshot tonight, as I wandered Shanghai, on my usual hunt for calories, sweet and savory.

There have been many many reams of articles written in frenzied anticipation of the opening day of KK in Shanghai, which KK writes on the above sign, will come in early December 2009. At the bottom of said sign, it is written in Chinese characters that whosoever shall be among the first 200 pilgrims lined up at the door on opening day shall receive a “special surprise”. Will you be among those chosen few? Judging by the wackiness witnessed at Dunkin Donuts’ recent “special prize” giveaways to “first-in-line” donut fans, I hereby prophesy that KK’s opening will be a bona fide donut mob scene.

You heard it here first.

More essential Shanghai donut news can be found here (my exhaustive, exhausting taste test of Shanghai donuts) and here. (Tried Bapple just the other day. The donuts were, in a word, horrendous). Donuts seem to be Shanghai's new Oobleck.

Easily the best and most important news of the year. Krispy Kreme is amazing.

This is great news! I just came back from Seoul over the weekend and enjoyed KK donuts (also great caramel latte made from organic coffee beans), so much that I brought some with me to SH since they don't have a branch back home (yet). While on my way to lunch yesterday, I found a KK soon to be opening store at In Point mall in Wujian Road! yahoo! It's for real! I'm so looking forward to their opening...forget calories!

I'm a huge fan of Top Pot - the Seattle craft doughnut ('hand forged is their preferred term: http://www.toppotdoughnuts.com/) that Starbucks has recently added to their line-up. Hard to beat the glazed old-fashioned produced by Top Pot! Sbux in Shanghai now has them, but I've not yet dared to try one. Has any reader tried the Shanghai version of Top Pot?

If you haven't spotted it yet, KK is a 2-story space at 169 Wujiang Lu (the mall close to Taixing Lu). The rumored opening date is Dec 11. Will you be in line?

Gross. In what crazy universe is this considered good news? Helping Chinese diabetes rates to catch up to the West's, while furthering the globalization and gentrification of Shanghai so that it's no different from Singapore - or Podunk. It is nice to have one of two of each of these chains in town so that foreigners can fix a craving, but more often these chains spread, non-native species sprouting everywhere. It is not a case of "If you don't like it, don't go" - the problem is that fast food chains can push out real, local restaurants.

Oh my... now all they need to do is open a Pinkberry and there will be no reason to live anywhere else.

When they arrived in London, it was like the second coming. Can't wait! Have you tried the 'old fashioneds' that Starbuck's is now selling? Absolutely no nuance-- the dough only exists to add shape to the concentration of industrial grade lard and sugar. You must try once, just to experience the disbelief!

KK are disgusting. They had a novelty factor, but after that wore off, things soon went downhill for them. Expect typical hysteria on here followed by the place being forgotten.

i'm excited about kk. maybe also because i'm a die-hard SATC fan... and that episode where miranda and the weightwatchers guy kills their diet over kk donuts is forever etched in my mind...
