Only 2 more days to try snacks from all over China!

I was desperately craving a CoCo milk tea the other day, so I walked halfway across town to get to my closest CoCo. When I arrived I was surprised to find a festive, bustling street food fair with native snacks from provinces all over China.

The festival, entitled 迎世博•中华民俗风情节 is part of a city effort to both promote the World Expo, no surprise there, and to help Wujiang Lu build its reputation as a food destination (although the fact that they tore down nearly all the best historic food stalls there last year does seem counter-productive).

Still, this is a fun and festive food fair—so get on down there! It goes all day into the evening, and the last day is tomorrow, March 24.

Festival overview:

Held jointly by Shanghai Commercial Economy Studies Association, Shanghai Business Magazine and Shanghai Expo Service Company, the festival is aimed at promoting Wujiang Lu after its recent reconstruction. There are 13 scheduled festivals every year, including a Thai food festival, Japanese food festival, and even an F1 carnival, to attract more folks to the new Wujiang Lu, and promote the new venues.

Foods awaiting you there:

Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hainan, Hubei, Fujian, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Guangdong and Taiwan and many other places are all representing. Some of the snacks recommended by visitors so far:

鸡煲翅 Chicken & shark fin soup–supposedly it’s the first time this popular Guangdong street food dish is being offered in Shanghai, so the crowds are lining up, one portion is ¥20

芙蓉虾 Fried shrimp and egg from Guangdong

洪七公叫化鸡 Beggars chicken from Hangzhou

藏牦牛牛肉干 Yak jerky from Tibet

Other fun:

There will be traditional Chinese music performances, singing, hip-hop dancing, (of course) and a magic show.
