You may remember CEE playing at SubCulture’s night at The Shelter back in late summer with ARABYRD, the fierce, Dayglo Malaysian MC who sings, warbles and rhymes her lyrics in a mix of Malay and English over speaker-splitting layers of bass. CEE’s back to play with Antidote for a night of wide-open barefoot bass music from the steamy tropical Malaysian underground.

Kuala Lumpur has built itself a tight little dubstep and bass scene, centered around CEE and his collaborators. CEE is originally from Austria and earned his musical stripes slinging dub and reggae with the Al Haca Soundsystem in Vienna. His music progressed deeper into bass territory and he relocated to Malaysia and started chopping out deep, glitchy cuts and working with acts like Stereotyp, Jahcoozi, Rawbird and Rockers HiFe. His sample-heavy tracks are intricate but powerful, drawing simultaneously on old school hip-hop, 8-bit sounds, classic dub, reggae and something altogether nastier that lurks in the heaving bass lines and shuffling, stuttering beats.

But where other proponents of bass reach straight for the modulation wheel and simply pile on the wobble when they’ve run out of ideas, CEE’s music still has that polished, repetitive, deep feel which belies his Germanic roots and his experience as a DJ and musician in Berlin. CEE and his peeps have already hosted some of Shanghai’s finest DJs over in Kuala Lumpur as well as teamed up to put on a bunch of Malaysian Antidote parties, so it seems only polite that we turn up to support.
