Belgian chemists-turned-DJs Mumbai Science will be tearing up the sound system at one of this year's biggest NYE parties. We caught up with the duo, comprised of 24-year-olds Maarten Elen and Jonas Kiesekoms, to find out what to expect from the MASSIVE show:
Mumbai Science has evolved from Project Cyborg and into a new sound. How would you describe a Mumbai Science set?
Maarten: Our sound can be described as oldskool techno rhythms combined with contemporary Electro synths. In our sets we try to build a vibe using future techno tracks mixed with a lot of our own productions. And when we're feeling it, we try to throw in some techno classics!
So, you guys have day jobs as scientists. Do you draw any inspiration from that work in your music?
Jonas: We always find a lot of inspiration in the world around us. Sometimes we try to analyze the crowd using social theories we learned about. You'd be surprised how much psychology is involved on the dance floor.
Maarten: Yeah, we'll never stop searching for the perfect formula to make a crowd dance! The main key appears to be playing good music (laughs). In our own music we are using a lot of inspiration from technology, mathematics and physics. Our new trilogy of EP's which is released in early January will feature a track called Researchers which we wrote in the lab!
What do you listen to when you're in the lab, or just chilling out and relaxing? Jonas, I heard Jazzy Jeff is one of your guilty pleasures. He was just in town last week.
Jonas: My favorites are old skool hip hop like Jazzy Jeff, I'm also really into Outkast. For a chill night I digg Drake's new album! I really like a lot of music so they're always something new to discover for me!
Maarten: Same for me, I like a lot of stuff. Right now I'm listening to Ray Charles and before that I was listening to the M83 album.
What memorable parties or festivals have you played lately?
Maarten: In november we played at I Love Techno, a really big indoor festival in Belgium. It was an amazing set, we had to close the night and people kept asking for more! There was a really really good vibe!
Jonas: It was special for us because our love for electronic music developed at this event. We went there as teenagers and to come back now to play was a really big honor.
Any expectations for the warehouse party - NYE MASSIVE - you'll play in Shanghai?
Jonas: It's our first time in Shanghai so I don't really know what to expect. We'll do our best and make a good impression. We'll bring some of our new tracks to play so it will be an amazing party for sure!
Maarten: I have no expectations at all! I heard Shanghai is the New York of China, but apart from that, I know nothing about the city. I didn't even know they celebrated NYE in China!
How will the set bring 1,500 partiers into the New Year? Tracks or remixes that we should watch out for?
Jonas: We'll bring a lot of exclusive tracks from our friends. And of course our new EP which will be released the 9th of January. New years eve is always my favorite party of the year so I'm sure we'll have a blast together!
Any New Years resolutions?
Jonas: For 2012 I want to keep making music that people can enjoy and cherish these amazing moments with friends and family! And off course I want to get people dancing even more in 2012.
Maarten: That and I promise to finally clean up my ITunes folder!
