Last Night's Gig
Ok, I propose this to be a forum where anyone who went to a live music show in the last week can post comments about that show. I go to a fair amount of shows in Shanghai but I rarely talk to other people about what I've just witnessed. So this is our chance to spit game about bands, audiences, and venues. Feel free to report on sound equipment failure, annoying fatheads moshing at inappropriate times and any other tales of live music woe. Which bands sucked, which bands showed promise...let's finally start talking about music...

Good forum topic. Here's a link to all the live music shows in Shanghai. We'll be vidcasting a review of Boys Climbing Rope on CW this week. We tried Snapline first and so far so good.

Since I started this thing, I'm gonna post the first comment. Last Saturday night found me at Live Bar watching the folk show. The first (one, two, three, four...) four musicians were decent, though not wildly original. They were playing western-style folk music and singing in maybe half English, half Chinese. Personally this brand of music doesn't do a great deal for me, but it was still alright. Then the headliner, Bai Yu, came on stage with his epic mane of hair and flannel lumberjack coat, looking like a ghost from a Japanese horror movie. Apparently he studied guitar at the Shanghai Music Conservatory, which showed in his complicated and, to me, impressive guitar maneuvering. He played five songs, sometimes softly, sometimes going nuts, like at one point when he flew out of his seat and started jumping around like a lunatic. I would definitely see him play again. I left before the last act, some kind of laowai band, because they were taking too long to set up. Am I allowed to say "laowai band"? Anyone see them or know who they were?
