Lovefoxxx is the stage name of CSS 25 year old frontwoman Luisa Hanae Matsushita from Campinas, Brazil. CSS, short for Cansei de ser Sexy, electro-nu rave-rock band, known for their crazy outfits and entertaining shows. Lovefoxxx is engaged to marry Klaxons' Simon Taylor. We met Lovefoxxx for a short chat at Starbucks, only a few hours before she graced the DJ booth at Club BonBon on Friday. The short, stylishly dressed Brazilian girl introduced herself as Luisa, and ordered a strawberry short cake and asked us a few questions before the interview, and we sat down to casually chat about catwalking, fashion, music, cooking and parties.
Getting to know Luisa aka Lovefoxxx
We saw the CSS show in Copenhagen a few months ago – we really liked your catwalk down through the audience!
[laughs] Whenever me and the girls and Adriano get together, usually its to play shows. Whenever I get a bit drunk I love doing catwalk walks – and the girls will yell “Dolce Gabbana!” “Betsy Johnson!” and I will do the walk, and it’s so much fun. It’s very 90’s and a bit corny to do this type of thing. Whenever there’s some space, sometimes we get the people to do a catwalk on the stage but they don’t do it properly—it’s a competition! [laughs]
So what’s your family background?
My mom is half German, her father is Portuguese – my father his parents are Japanese but he's born in Brazil. I’m from the state of Sao Paulo, a smaller town called Campinas.
Do you speak Japanese?
I can say simple things, like how much is that etc. I’ve been there 4 times. Last time we toured, we went to Nagoya, Osaka Tokyo, Yokohama.
About the music
You once said that CSS came from the fashion scene in Brazil—you used to be an illustrator assistant—has that affected your style and performances?
I used to do prints. I don’t think my work previous to CSS influenced anything that much– it’s what I like, it’s who I am--I’m really interested in clothing and fashion. When I was young I wanted to be a designer so I learned to sew and make clothes. Now I don’t have time to make my clothes anymore. We’ve been to busy, so we’re gonna take a break but still playing some festivals like, All Tomorrow’s Parties--the Breathers invited us to play. We didn’t really want to play in England this year, we need to give them a break from us. We’re going to play in Japan, Poland and Portugal – but 2009 will be for resting. Tomorrow I’ll go to Kuala Lumpur for another DJ set.
Your catsuits are infamous! Who makes them?
I found a very good friend who makes my cat suit because I'm too busy to make them myself. She’s from Kansas, Missouri--she’s very cool. She works with a band called SSion--you should look them up on Youtube – they have the best music videos, this guy called Cody is in the band and directs their videos – they’re incredible—check out this song called 'Bullshit', it was just released and I love it. I really wish we (CSS) had more time and energy to do our own music videos – we really would like to make something with Cody, because he’s so talented and inspiring.
So when did you start Dj’ing on your own?
Before CSS had any songs, we would have a party twice a month, and we all used to DJ at our party. Each week we would come up with a theme–my favorite one was the Party of the Crazy Faggot [laughs] it was like this: If you haven’t come out of the closet yet, you could bring your mother and father, bring IDs and if you tell your parents that you’re gay in front of us, you would get in for free and get two beers. But no body did it.[laughs].We also did one, Show us your butt and we post the photo on our blog. This one guy did it, and his girlfriend was so proud [laughs] because they both got in for free. We used to DJ all the time at our parties, but it was like irresponsible DJ’ing. But we always DJ’ed after our concerts, and it’s a great opportunity for me to come here to China and DJ. It’s different, because there’s always so many people around me on the road and my friends but here it’s just me—but the promoters are so nice to me.
What kind of songs will we be hearing tonight?
I really play what I like to listen to—I always start with something quite cool, so people think I’m cool—to get their credibility. I never play anything I don’t like. Then I start playing what I really like, like new bands, electro and indie you know. Then I play more of the crappy stuff I like, like 80’s and 90’s dance and ‘Flashdance’ soundtrack—it’s so good!
Cool, Will you play any CSS songs?
Well usually I don’t like playing them, but I do play them because people expect it, and I’ve never been to Shanghai before so I will play some.
Yeah in China, nu rave music isn’t that well known yet- so I guess it’s a big deal for you to come here.
Yeah none of us have been to China before so it's really cool.
It’s a shame you won’t have that much time to check out Shanghai.
Well I went around yesterday--we went to check out a Garden…I don’t remember the name …
Yu garden?
Yeah that’s it, and it was very Chinese, and loads and loads of people--I had a stamp made with my Chinese name Lui sha. I also went to this other cool little modern place with young people and cafes and art galleries etc--I really liked it.
Oh you mean Taikang lu?
Yeah yeah I think so--if I lived here I would hang out there all the time!
So music is your hot, hot sex -- Finish the sentence: Shanghai is my …. Chinese Sao Paulo [laughs]
Any big plans for 2009— is a wedding dress the next thing we’ll see you wearing?
I’m very excited about resting this year—it’s been so intense with the band—it’s cool but sometimes you don’t know who you are anymore. I just turned 25. It’s a very privileged position to be in, it never feels like a job—to be able to travel it’s really amazing. But at the same time it takes a lot of you--You’ve got to learn how to preserve yourself, or you won’t have anything left of you. I’m doing whatever I want to do this year—I’m going to do a Cordon Bleu cooking course in June which I’m really excited about.
Where did (CSS) Cansei de ser Sexy come from?
This was like a Beyonce quote you know—but I was just logging into my hotmail, and saw some music news that ‘Beyonce said she was tired of being sexy’, and I told the other guys, ‘Beyonce said this, isn’t it weird?’ Cansei de ser sexy sounded cool. But I never read the whole article—now if I try to google it, everything links back to us (CSS).
Now it’s a mystery…
Now I’ll never know. Never [laughs]
Okay thanks, it was a pleasure meeting you.
Oh okay you too, I really liked your interview!
Thank you!
Lovefoxxx showed up at BonBon at midnight, dressed in black, blue nails and her signature crazy make up look. Before being photographed, she had a few Carlsberg beers to 'loosen up' a bit. She proceeded to sign the BonBon posters, with funny messages like "mmm I want a BonBon" and then took pictures with some fans. Bonbon was pretty packed, and she started the set with some popular electro hits, including "Lykke Li's I'm good I'm gone" remix, Yelle "Je veux te voir" and then ventured into more 90's dance music like Madonna's "Like a Prayer". Kudos to Lovefoxxx for playing what she likes, but maybe the Whitney Houston "I wanna dance with somebody" could have been left out. Nevertheless, Lovefoxxx looked awsome, and had fun jumping around and singing along. She even tried teaching the audience a dance move and toasted with some fans. BonBon is consistently bringing big names to Shanghai, so check out hiphop-rock band the Bumblebeez from Australia, known for hit "Dr Love", playing at Bon Bon on March 27.
