In Scene Not Heard, Brian Offenther talks to people involved in the Shanghai music scene who perform vital but perhaps less conspicuous roles. Here he talks to Kaine Biwen Lv. She does music-related art work, from show posters to the mural on the wall of Yuyintang.

What art projects have you been a part of involving music?
Oh, there are a bunch of them. I've done dozens of posters. I've done sponsorship decks for Split Works. I've done design for a rocker who wrote a book.

Which is your favorite poster?
The Triple Nipples poster (see below) because it is creepy. It's a crow with three heads and some blue flowers.

How does the music influence your art work when you work with a band?
I always listen to their music while I draw the posters. I don't really care about the lyrics, just the feeling.

How much do you work with the musicians when you make art for them?
Not a lot. They usually just leave me alone and let me do whatever I want to.

You drew the numerous namesake animal of the Black Rabbit Festival. How many did you draw?
Before we came up with the [final] logo, I drew maybe 100 or 200 black rabbits. After, I drew a bunch of rabbits on the ground: a music festival scene of black rabbits, hundreds of them. For a whole month after Black Rabbit I hated bunnies, which I used to love a lot.

Have you/do you want to make music? Would you prefer being able to do that than draw?
Yeah, I had a band when I was in high school. Compare to making music though, I still like drawing a bit more.

What makes a good poster?
A proper mood and a proper pencil.
