Shanghai Weekender: Spread the Love

Got a friend-with-benefits you never see during daylight hours? A girlfriend that clings to your every word or a boyfriend that carries your purse? How about a secret crush you see every morning on the metro? No matter what your current facebook relationship status says, change it to complicated, then divorced. Then promptly put on all the cologne you can muster or your sexiest mini-skirt and make plans for a romantic dinner, mushy movie or a long night of bumping uglies on the dance floor. This weekend is all about spreading the love (and wrapping it up!) Still don’t know how to surprise your sweetie? Check out the big badass list of Valentine's Day dinners and parties for a few ideas.

As we’ve proven time and time again, it’s never too early to start boozing. Random evenings like Thursdays tend to be especially epic because everyone claims they are just going out for a few beers. And then, BAM! It’s 8am, you’re in a foreign bed, still wearing your shoes and desperately searching for your iPhone, all while trying to sneak out in stealth mode. Long overdue for one of those nights? The Apartment has been bumping on weeknights as of late and you know the pub crawl is cruising around somewhere. Cotton Club’s house band with sultry leading lady Ginger will knock your socks off and if you’re in the mood to dance, blues-reggae-rock-funk infusion Greg Luttrell Blues Band is back in town at House of Blues and Jazz.

On Friday, watch out! This is the first opportunity for weekend warriors to black out and rub themselves all up in your business at Hollywood’s Sexy Nerd party or ILS’s abstinthe annihilation. Maybe instead of immediately shooting your best death stare, be thankful for the attention, give them a chance at a mediocre pick-up line, and try not to chug the free drink before “heading to the bathroom” or “finding a friend.”

If you haven’t shacked up with a special someone or random no one by Saturday, it’s time to get downright dirty. The LOVE BANG party at DADA is bound to be hopping and if you don’t want to beat around the bush, shamelessly wade through hoards of singles and find your perfect match at Okay Deal’s Lock and Key party. BEAN’s hopped on the singles train with a bachelor and bachelorette auction If you’re in the mood for something slightly (just barely) more substantive, soulful Scandanavian post-rock crew Immanu El are playing Yuyintang. Check out some of their tracks here. Grub and Groove is putting on a chilled out acoustic session

Thankfully, we live in a city of never-ending weekends. Sunday night get your rage face on for Lamb of God at the unofficial pre-party where Chaos Mind, Moon Tyrant and Prophets will destroy the stage (and your eardrums). Jorma Kaukonen, inspirational guitarist and the man responsible for the Jefferson Airplane's namesake is strumming at YYT.

Johanna. Please forgive me as i do not wish to be rude, but week after week you mention The Apartment or The Geisha. What is your love affair with them ? They are ok, but you seem to appreciatethem a lot more than us mere mortals. Look elsewhere at other places with REAL events or parties going on. I read 3 or 4 websites and know more about what`s going on than you do. The Mr Stokes Returns Party at Dada 80s Party at Lune Riveria Party at Haven Drum n Bass Free Amanda at Beedees Acid Pony Club Vinyl Night at The Shelter La Modiva Party at Sugar All this stuff and more is this Friday and Saturday. What was your first mention ????? Yes. The Apartment. What are they doing ??? Absolutely nothing at all. Can you see where im going with this ?

Hey nonsugar. Where you going tonight? I was out last Thursday and went to a bunch of the spots you mention. All were absolutely dead. Not an alcoholic soul at the bar or loner on the dance floor. Stopped by Apartment on my way home and it was packed....so yeah, I usually try to mention places where I know there will be a decent crowd. Always open for recommendations so let me know what's good.

It was still in the throes of CNY last weekend Jo and i was at The Apartment on the friday and it was not very busy at all. Dont get all defensive, as long as its out there that people know you mention The Apartment a lot then fine as you will be more wary of it in future. For your own amusement i will be at Barbarossa for dinner and drinks then to Santo Chino and Mr Stokes party. You have not been in twon long enough yet to know about Santo Chino and Mr Stokes and the Bananas partys so will not bother to explain about them
