Before embarking to Broadway, Shanghai got a taste of the spectacular ensemble Soul of Shaolin: Hui Guang's Story on a 2-night exclusive last December 8-9 at Shanghai Theater Academy.

Soul of Shaolin is the story of Hui Guang, a child who was separated from his mother, and was found by a Kung Fu monk from a Shaolin Temple. He then grows up within the walls of the temple and under the care of the monks. He became skilled in Kung Fu and has adopted a monk’s life until that fateful day he discovers about his mother. Hui was torn between his duties as a monk and the yearning for his mother. In the end, a mother’s love has proven to be more powerful.

Performed by expert martial artists, Soul of Shaolin is an amazing show of prowess, discipline and choreography. Audience cannot stop with the gasps and awe as the artists perform one stunt after the other. The display of Kung Fu skills is simply remarkable. The backdrop beautifully depicts monastic life and the music blended well with each scene. The storyline may be simple but it does not sell short of the drama. One has to truly appreciate the hard work put by each artist. It is indeed a show not to miss!

Though there are many impressive highlights in the show, the following stood out:

  • The scene where Hui Guang was growing up, and how he learns the different techniques of Kung Fu. Three artists portrayed Hui at different ages. The agility of the artists is amazing as each one performed his own unique repertoire of twists, kicks and jumps.

  • The scene where the monks show off their Kung Fu skills and try to outdo each other. The artist lifted only by spears is heart-stopping.

Soul of Shaolin is slated to be shown on Broadway from January 13-31 at the famous Marquis Theater. Click here for more details. For the good news: After Broadway, the show will be brought back to Shanghai and Beijing (dates still to be confirmed)! Do check out CW for the updates.
