You may have gotten a taste of Spring Festival travel woes for the average Zhou in Wang Jing's heartwarming drama Yi Nian Dao Tou (一年到头). But in Fan Lixin’s Last Train Home(归途列车) (VPN required), the lens zooms in on China’s migrant workers, exploring the underside of China’s glorious economic development.
Fan follows a migrant couple who have been working away from home for over 16 years to fund their children’s education. The two are so strapped they can only make the trip home for Spring Festival every few years. The film crew lived with the family for three years, recording their everyday lives. From trying to gain access to the factory floor to struggling amid a flood of people in a train station in Guangzhou for tickets home, the film crew takes the viewers in as far as possible into couple’s reality. “We lived with this family, felt a part of them. We felt what they felt, happiness, sadness and anger. We tried to be neutral and just record the reality of this family, but it was difficult to do when faced with the difficulties of their lives,” says Fan.
Last Train Home won Best Feature-Length Documentary at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in 2009. Originally, Fan aimed this film at a Chinese audience, but so far, it can only be seen in theaters in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
