Chinese-American contemporary classical composer / artist Tan Dun returns to Zhujiajiao with his water percussion masterpiece, Water Concerto: A Drop from Heaven. Known for his Oscar-winning scores for Ang Lee’s film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Zhang Yimou’s Hero, Tan has been fascinated by music made with organic objects such as rocks and water since he was a child.

After shocking the world with his genius Paper Concerto and Clay Concerto, Tan created this intoxicating four-act percussion concert combing the elements of water, ancient Chinese architecture, traditional Chinese string instruments, opera and contemporary dance. Inspired by the tranquility and simple rural life in the water town, the concert is a symphony that mixes Bach’s music, monks’ chanting and “steel rock” performed by percussionists who dance on the “music stairs,” which serve different purposes throughout the show. After an hour in Tan’s water heaven, audiences may explore the music stairs and make their own water melodies.
