There he is: standing in a room full of antiques, wearing a black dress and a string of pearls, speaking in English with a German accent. A departure from his last performance in The Odd Couple, this time Charlie Mayer plays 35 different roles in 3rd Culture Theatre’s I am My Own Wife. In the upcoming production, he’ll blow your mind.

I am My Own Wife tells the tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who survived the Nazi regime and soviet-style dictatorship. Author Doug Wright's fascination with the life of Charlotte lead him to pen this Pulitzer prize winning stage play.

One of the play's fascinating aspects is that Mayer, staring as Charlotte, plays 35 characters throughout the performance - sometimes playing four characters in one scene. Mayer calls Charlotte the hardest character he has ever played, saying “You have to slow it right down and do it over and over. It’s like a dance. Insanity helps.”

Insane or not, it's a thought-provoking play, “all about personal identity and courage, and how we are represented to the world, how people see us and judge us,’’ producer Elena Yeo explains.

Whether you are curious to see how Charlie plays 35 characters or if you're interested in the story of this German transvestite, it’s worth checking out. Who knows? You may find a bit of Charlotte in yourself.
