The Shanghai Ballet Gets "In the Mood for Love"

The city gets In the Mood for Love as the Shanghai Ballet Company re-sets Wong Kar-wai’s famous film in ’30s Shanghai. When Mrs. Li (originally played by Maggie Cheung) and Mr. Wang played by Tony Leung move into a shikumen with their spouses, their feelings toward each other mark the beginning of a star-crossed relationship.

Set in Shanghai, director Bertrand d’At makes use of some of the city’s most renowned landmarks to recreate the romance in the ’30s. Rickshaws and old lanes reference Shanghai’s pre-WWII architecture, and the stage even features the Paramount Night Club, providing a nostalgic setting for the stars. Ji Pingping, who has been performing for nearly two decades with the Shanghai Ballet, headlines as Mrs. Li, and New York International Ballet Competition winner Wu Hu-Sheng plays her mysterious lover. Set to Beethoven, this performance uses pas de deux, a ballet duet between two dancers, to translate the love story en pointe.

I saw this ballet last night, I went in with the highest of expectations, and left extremely disappointed. "In the mood for love" is based on Wong Kar-Wai's beautiful cinematic creation that is atmospheric and musical, it is one of few films where words are not the means of conveying the story, it is rather cinematography and score that play a bigger role. And this leaves an open space for dance interpretation, which could be used beautifully. It was not. The choreography was quite clumsy, especially in group performances. It was obvious that the 2 soloists are very talented, and their duets were the least off-putting part of the ballet. It is a shame they were not given something more to work with. The production team obviously tried hard to re-create Shanghai in the 1930's on stage - but it takes more than some old music, a Paramount set and a rickshaw going across the stage every 5 minutes. There should have been more emphasis on the choreography and on making the ensemble look like an ensemble - coordinated and involved in the performance. Instead it felt awkward and clumsy. This feeling was not helped by the audience being let in the theater half an hour already into the ballet. Not a few people, but whole groups. As a general rule, if one is more than 5 minutes late to the beginning of the performance, one should be required to wait until recess. Also, the beeping of text messages being received somehow ruins the ambiance of the ballet performance. Now, for the most annoying part: the story was not conveyed through dance, it was instead conveyed through text on the side displays. With the exception of modern interpretations, installations and art inter-disciplinary creations, if you cannot express it through dance, do not try and put on a dance performance. All of this contributed to the overall feeling that unfortunately this is a failed attempt at what had all the potential to be a beautiful dance creation.
