Graceful, artistic and feminine. Those are usually the words used to describe a ballet performance. The Taming of the Shrew is one hilarious exception. Based on Shakespeare’s renowned comedy, this ballet features a stunning array of comically exaggerated movements, exhilarating dancing, a bizarrely entertaining story and vivid characterization, which makes it stand out from all other traditional romantic ballet classics.

Created in 1969 by John Cranko, an internationally acclaimed choreographic master from South Africa, the two-act show is now one of the most successful comedy ballets in the world. The show tells the story of how Petruchio, a Venetian gentleman, tempers his feisty, obstinate bride-to-be Katherina with various psychological torments, set on “taming the shrew” out of her. Having always been a staple of the troupe’s repertoire, The Taming of the Shrew will be performed by Munich’s Bavarian State Ballet, a prestigious national ballet troupe proudly boasting a history of 193 years.
