It’s only June, but soon enough the weather will be too hot to risk the outdoors. So if you’re a music lover, don’t suffer through a music festival in the park, where your feet get filthy and your clothes drenched in sweat. Instead, head for the cool embrace of the city’s best concert halls for the second Shanghai Chamber Music Competition and Festival. Hosted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the week-long event features 12 string quartets and 15 piano trios from Beijing, Wuhan, Guangdong and Shanghai, each one competing for a prestigious award and a grand prize of RMB129,500.

The festival also includes non-competitive chamber music concerts, including performances from Shanghai’s own MBQ Quartet, the Hao Jie Trombone Quartet, the Bennewitz Quartet from the Czech Republic, Germany’s Boulanger Trio and the first prize winner of the 2009 Shanghai Chamber Music Competition, Simply Quartet. If you’re a fan of chamber music masterpieces from Haydn and Mozart to Beethoven and Dvořák or just like to suit up for a night out, this is a fun festival that’s not to be missed.
