You might never have heard the name Han Hong, but if you’ve done KTV with a group of Chinese friends, likely one of them has made a valiant run at Han’s signature work, “Qingzang Gaoyuan” (Tibetan Plateau). The tune has been one of the most popular KTV songs since its release in 2001.

The Tibetan folk song is just like its performer—bold and forthright. Born and raised in Tibet, Han inherited her sonorous, resonant voice from her Tibetan singer mother and her straightforward, effusive character from her Han army officer father. After developing a fascination with music at the age of 9, the 40-year-old singer / songwriter is now a prominent female singer in her home country and has released six wildly popular albums and performed at the Beijing Olympics’ closing ceremony and the Summer Paralympics opening ceremony in 2008. While she’s known for her down-to-earth, tomboy style, Han dons Lady Gaga-worthy accessories at her concerts for serious stage effect.
