2009 SILF Podcast: Bamboo Hirst Goes Between Two Cultures

Spend a fascinating hour listening to the tale of Bamboo Hirst, born to a dashing Italian diplomat and a beautiful Chinese singer who met in 1930s Shanghai. The Japanese occupation forces them to leave their baby daughter with the French Catholic St Joseph’s mission (just across Yan’an Road from M) where she remains until the age of 13, when she sails alone for Italy, a place she has never known. Bamboo paints a lush portrait of wartime China, and her quest to find her identity and place in the world.
