Eight may be China's lucky number, but riders on Shanghai's recently completed Metro Line 7 can also uncover some shopping fortune–that is, if they know where to go once they hop off. Luckily, we've charted out this now-more-accessible shopping territory for you.
Take exit 7 out of Changshou Lu station and enter the Ya Xin Department Store, a small but lively four-story mall. Away from the mayhem of the small vendors dominating the first floor, 52 Gift on the first floor sells homeware such as retro alarm clocks andmquirky knick-knacks like lighters disguised as cookies. The second and third floors overflow with men's and women's apparel from smaller Asian brands, while stores like Adidas, Nike and Esprit have also set up shop. "It's especially fun to come on the weekends or at night when there is more to do than just shop," says Lili He, a local high schooler who suggests you continue upstairs for some fun at BMB Karaoke or Hollywood Billiards.
At the next station, Changping Lu, follow the music west onto Xinzha Lu toward Yamaha Music Square but, if you pick out a baby grand piano, don't try to roll it back onto the subway.
As the train snakes south into Xuhui district, get out at Changshu Lu Station and cross the street toward Wuyuan Lu. There, you will see 100 Percent, a boutique selling funky modern collections by Chinese designers, and Lan Maison, which stocks small French furnishings. Nearby is the Miss Mean boutique, owned by local designer Ni Hua, who says her designs are inspired by the aura of the neighborhood. "They have a few similarities: an old style and a smooth sense of memory," says Ni. "The neighborhood looks so calm but it is full of power and life."
Line 7's Zhaojiabang Lu station is just south of Haus 658, a two-story showroom
displaying luxurious contemporary home decor. A little further down the street–and much further down the price scale–nip into Rondo Art Studio whose tapestries, sculpture and furniture strike a harmonious blend of inner peace and outward beauty.
