Zaobao Zaobao! August 4th, 2008: Prime Minister Wen Jiabao slam dunks the competition!
Back from a two and half day sale meeting, this is my first post in August. Last night, I had a dream of writing the word "Olympic" over and over and over again. Bear with me on all the small and big Olympic news this month. My predication: all Olympic news all the time.
Front Page Story
On his visit to the Olympic stadium today, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao talked to the Chinese basketball team before they open against the U.S.A on Aug. 10. He also made a few lay ups. The Prime Minister also promised to keep Beijing clean on a regular basis not only for the Olympics. With an overall focus on economic development, I doubt this promise is going to materialize anytime soon.
Other headlines today
There might be thunder showers on the day of the opening ceremony. These days, even dust on the streets of Beijing is headlines on the Morning Post.
People can start to read the Liberation Daily on their mobile phones. Oldest news publication in China goes mobile. Cool.
Traffic control applied during the Olympic soccer games in Shanghai. Well, if you live near the Shanghai stadium make sure you find out more about this, or you can stay put at home, grab a beer and watch the games on TV.
The ex-mayor of Shanghai was sentenced to prison for his involvement in the social security scandal. His son, who was also arrested, was released today without charges.
130 people were killed in a small temple during religious celebration in northern India. The people started to panic after a railing collapsed. 3,000 people tried to rush back into the temple for cover. Another case of people losing their minds under life-threatening situation.
