Zaobao! Zaobao! July 7th, 2008: Just don't melt! HOT HOT!

Morning Shanghai. It's my debut as your daily headlines blogger for City Weekend. I'll be translating and putting into perspective Shanghai's daily headlines from the biggest newspaper, Shanghai Morning Post or Xīnwén Chénbào. Let me know what you think. Hope to hear back from you.

Front page story

The infamous Shanghai Summer is here! Even pigeons are taking cover from this hot, wet and crazy summer. Today's forecast: 39˚ with 59% humidity. Tomorrow offers more of the same. They say that today "Feels like 39˚. Well remember that the Shanghai summer is just one of things you learn to live with in a city we all love. Let’s just hope it ends soon. Other headlines today

  • Shanghai is taking a hard stance towards police assaults as the city government grants approval to arrest four alleged attackers on three different cases of police assault. (more on page 2)

  • Yesterday, the bullet train from Beijing to Tianjin completed its first run. The whole 32-min trip was smooth and quiet. For those of you wondering what does this have to do with me, the railway from Shanghai to Beijing and Nanjing are built using the same technology. (page 3)

  • After the opening of direct flight from the Shanghai to Taiwan, the first tourist group from Shanghai went abroad a sightseeing train trip that take passengers around the Taiwan Island. No matter what the political situation is, people on both sides are getting closer. One point for a better world. (page 6)

  • Aside from Taiwan, the other ‘T’ on China’s agenda is making progress as well. After the meeting with representative of the Dalai Lama, the Chinese United Front Work department said Dalai Lama agreed to stop supporting activities aimed to separate Tibet from China. Come on people, let's focus our energy on more productive matters. (also on page 6)

It's a hot and balmy 38˚out there today. Keep cool.

I heard that the Shanghai government will never report a temperature of 40 degrees. In the past they've gone as high as 39.8 degrees, but never 40. I guess people would spontaneously melt if they did????

Well, there was rule that if it is 40 degrees. All of us would receive that day off. I got a day off on 40 ten years ago in middle school.
