Underground labyrinth
Perfect for: flamboyant fellows
Rm1950, No 4, Huai Hai Zhong Lu 淮海中路4号1950室
6283-1043
Duck into an underground passageway off Huai Huai Lu; past the flickering TV sets, homo-erotic paintings and amorphous sculptures and you'll finally stumble across the communications hub of this club - its luminous orange bar. Behind the multi-colored arse-hugging seats, you'll find a rather camp bartender who dispatches bowls of banana chips and ¥30 beers to the various patrons, then allows them to roam the various rooms, private cinemas and art-filled corridors of this subterranean labyrinth. Unfortunately, every so often the cheesy beats (Ricky Martin anyone?) wrestle what could be a fantastical experience into the prosaic realms of a sweaty 80s lounge bar. So if you're looking for complete sensory immersion, free from the torturous cliches of sleazy rock, take along your I-pod.

A gay-owned gallery/bar in an underground bomb shelter! Look for the illuminated entrance hidden in the alleyway to enter Shanghai's coolest gay underground space yet. Art exhibits line the corridors that zig/zag, as you descend into a series of pleasure chambers that include the sexy underwear shop, Manifesto, four bars, cozy dance floor with DJ and tons of dark corners. This subterranean labyrinth attracts a crowd, with a nice mix of locals, expats and visitors.

A lot has changed at Shanghai Studio since this review was written. The place is twice is large, attracts a diverse and smiley crowd of expats and locals, and the music varies depending on which DJ is on. Plus, look out for special events throughout the year including the v fabulous annual drag party hosted by yours truly.
