Pudong’s Shile Boutique Lifestyle Center steps up to show us how to slow down
Can you name ten activities that improve your lifestyle? According to traditional Chinese beliefs, the ten "joie de vivre" include painting, reading, resting, exercising, conversation, sitting in the sunshine, sipping wine, gardening, taking a walk and listening to music. The Shile Boutique Lifestyle Center in Pudong embraces this centuries old philosophy and presents a modern hub in which city busybodies can relax, unwind and rejuvenate.
"We want to provide a place of escape and relaxation from busy lifestyles," says Public Relations Manager Lily Sun. The effect is immediate. Upon entering this building, designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, city sounds give way to melodies selected by sound designer Flaneur. Interior designers Faye Lin, Vera Chu and Ray Chou present Chinese cultural influences through the use of dark flooring, heavy wooden doors, hand-painted murals and intricate detailing. Furnishings range from traditional redwood pieces to seemingly traditional chairs which, in fact, are Armani.
Inspired by the simple and natural lifestyle pursued by intellectuals in the Song Dynasty, Shile offers five aptly named venues. "Our lounge is called 'Bobo Jiu,'" says Sun. "This comes from a poem by Su Shi about a man who adds water to his precious jug of wine it to make it last longer." The diluted wine is tasteless, says Sun, but the meaning behind this is much stronger: Excess is not better than simplicity and enjoyment. Other venues on the premise include a spa, Fei Fei Xiang ("think what you wish to think, or wish to not think at all"); Chinese restaurant, Xiao Shan Qing ("nature and true virtues are eternal"); study, Jiu Si ("nine thoughts"); and the soon-to-open Kang Dao Health Management Center, where members will receive personal consultations with medical specialists offering guidance for better living and anti-aging.
"Here, we focus on the five senses, and quality," says Mimi Tung, director of sales and marketing. "We personalize your experience, share our team’s passion for Chinese culture, and invite people to enjoy 'slow living.'" The next time you're looking to slow down your life, gaze up at the starry sky from Shile's terrace, exhale and count to ten.
