New Disco Fever
Paramount Party Room
The first thought that comes to mind when you enter the historical Paramount building's latest creation is Studio 54 and BabyFace rolled into one. The Paramount Party Room's decor juxtaposes a 70s era disco, characterized by several glistening disco balls hanging from the ceiling, with the strobe lights and trance music of one of Shanghai's trendy nightclubs. The most poignant visual in the establishment is the neon blue dual staircase that descends from the second floor and surrounds the DJ's booth. The ginger mojito (¥48) was refreshing, but not strong enough to get us on the dance floor. A dimly lit lounge area adjacent to the bar was filled with a mostly older local crowd, punctuated with a few expats, relaxing on beige sofas and sipping cocktails. While the Room's style and feel was unique in its own right, it has a long way to go to become Shanghai's next hot spot.
