The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Having only eaten boerewors before, we really didn't know what to expect from Shanghai's only South African restaurant. But at Chakalaka, this spicy sausage, is served skewered with mango (¥30). Bobotie (¥68), a slightly sweet and spicy dish of minced beef with sultanas and apricots under a baked custard, was satisfying. A lamb curry (¥72) looked unappetizing but was an original take on a curry. The food is largely quite tame on the game: Where is the ostrich and crocodile? Despite having South African wines the house wine is Australian (¥38/glass). It is in a former factory, with a few paintings of Africa, in an area which has yet to catch on. –M.A.

I think 3 stars is unfair for this place. Although I am South African and maybe biased, in all honesty I think the food at this place is excellent. Also the reviewer shows their ignorance of SA by thinking that we are always chewing on exotic meats. Although ostrich is popular (in the form of dried meat called biltong) it is hardly a regular on restaurant menus; crocodile less so. In fact restaurants serving such things as elephant stew and giraffe casserole are strictly for Taiwanese tourists who like to see their game and then eat it. SA is a melting pot of people and similarly its food is an influence of many cultures: Dutch, British, French, German, Malay, Indian, Portuguese, and of course local African tribes. A good example is Bobotie which is basically a Malay version of Shepherd's Pie. Although Chakalaka serves fairly regular fare like salads and sandwiches, everything I have had there has been very tasty. Besides if the chef (from SA) put some very traditional dishes on the menu such as Mopani worms or Skop (sheep/goat head), I doubt his business would do so well. So stop looking for the "real" Africa and just go grab a good bite to eat :-)

I thought the review of chakalaka was also pretty ignorant.Less tha one percent of SA restaurants serve ostrich or crocodile.The food at chakalaka represents food eaten every day across the cultures in South Africa.As a South African I think the food is pretty damn good.
