1. PAUL

Quality is a tradition at this bakery which has been building a name for itself since 1889. With stores in Japan, Turkey, Morocco, Holland and the US, PAUL has finally landed in China. Each store's own unique flare coupled with the staple antique style sets the backdrop for their roster of delights from their famous country bread to classic rye to their fougasse, each guaranteed to be fresh and tasty.

2. Marriott (Hongqiao) Bakery

Hotels aren't a grocery stop for many people; however, this bakery offers some of the best breads around. Pick the highly recommended Italian ciabatta. Other choices include olive bread, pretzels, dark rye, baguettes and bagels. Though a bit pricier than your local Lianhua, this bakery guarantees fresh, quality bread.

3. Mon Rêve

This special bakery will recreate any image–entirely in chocolate. Or if that's not enough, try any of their to-die-for pastries paired with a cup of hot chocolate or tea. This is the perfect place to take advantage of special occasions and get a delicious custom-made chocolate cake.

4. Bastiaan Bakery & Konditorei

Conveniently located on Hongmei Lu, this bakery is known for its German rye breads, Belgian waffles and raisin rolls. Helmed by owner Bas Can Veenendaal, a professional baker for over 26 years, this spot even provides a kid's corner. Gather up the whole family for a morning or afternoon of bakery delights.

5. Coffee Oasis

A simple modern design of black and white chairs and a clean and relaxed atmosphere makes this a common stop for professionals during their lunch break. With delicious danishes, muffins and fresh bread, it is the perfect place for an afternoon rendezvous.
