Top 5 spots to ring in the New Year

1. Longhua Temple

Those looking to celebrate in a more traditional manner need look no further than Shanghai's best-preserved Buddhist temple. Festivities resemble a Chinese New Year with a dragon dance, performances and the ringing of a tremendous bell at midnight.

2. Xintiandi

Everyone's favorite block of retro architecture hosts one of the city's most crowded celebrations. The organizers are looking to outdo themselves this year with performances by S.H.E. and Taiwanese singer Emil Chau out on Taipingqiao Lake, a move sure to draw flocks of young Shanghainese.

3. Century Park

An accessible option for many Pudong-based expat families, Century Park holds what may be the city's most awe-inspiring fireworks display (with less drunken staggering than other New Year's events) and provides a welcome reprieve from congested urban gatherings elsewhere.

4. Shanghai Times Square

This Huaihai Lu shopping mall has made a name for itself thanks to its elaborate decorations and festivities. The holiday cheer culminates on New Year's Eve with a jovial gathering in the open plaza with musical performances and a countdown paying homage to the venue's namesake.

5. The Bund

Be it the first or the thousandth time you've strolled along the Bund, the heaving crowds, blooming fireworks and spectacular yin-yang of the opposing banks will leave you rapt. The more agoraphobic may wish to sequester themselves at New Heights or the Glamour Bar.
