Renowned hip-hop DJ and Producer, Jurassic 5's Nu-Mark, talks about his 35,000 strong record collection and more
You've been to Shanghai before, any expectations for this time around? I try to never have too many expectations. I really just enjoy playing for a crowd that appreciates good funk, hip-hop and Brazilian samba. Pretty sure we can find you one of those. What did you think of Shanghai when you were here last? I loved Shanghai but I didn't get to see it as much as the other cities on the last tour. Xiaolongbao rocks though! Think you'll make up for it this time around? Yeah, hopefully this time I'll get to meet the people and see the city. More people need to come out [to the show] and represent! Last time you used a toy, Little Monkey, as a prop during your show. Do you plan to bring him again? I might bring Maurice the Monkey with me again since China's the only country that has seen that routine. Do you use a different toy or tool for every show? I used to do that but lately I've been trying to perfect the best toys to give the people a better show. We hear that you've collected over 35,000 records, what do you look for when you buy one--or ten? I look for records by great musicians from 1968 to 1974 when recordings had a really gritty, dirty sound to them. It sounds real. In the late 60s and early 70s the albums sounded un-processed and musical. I'm intrigued with record collecting because I know that it's impossible for anyone to ever own every single record manufactured. Any plans for the future? I plan to continue to remix and produce for other artists. I'm working on my solo album right now that will feature MCs and singers with some instrumental songs as well. Any final advice for Shanghai party animals? Please drink a lot and dance to my music because after this I won't be in China again for close to a year (when my next album comes out), so I want to make this a good one.
