Jazz great Diana Krall preps for her third trip to China
This is not your first time touring China. Can you tell us about your previous experience here? Well, it's a great place to perform, a great place to be and I'm happy we're able to do concerts in China. I think this is my third time back and it's always very exciting. sWhat was a highlight of one of your Shanghai concerts? The outdoor concert was one of the highlights of my life actually, it was very intense and, well, great. "Intense" due to audience reaction, or something else? Yeah, well, I had never played to an audience in Shanghai before so it was exciting for the audience to be there and it was exciting for us to be there. The energies fed each other so it was just a great show. I can't quite describe it. When it's a great show, it's just a great show. You'll be playing songs primarily from your most recent album, The Very Best of Diana Krall. Can you tell us how you define your "very best" songs? It was pretty easy, we just chose songs that were very popular with audiences from our past tours. People are always curious about the impact of family. How did getting married [to Elvis Costello] and having your children impact your career and music? It's made everything much better. I get to concentrate both on being a mother and being a very busy, touring artist. It's put everything more in focus and [made it] more joyful. Are you familiar with the Shanghai jazz scene at all? Have you been able to listen to any local musicians? No, I actually haven't had time. I would really like to go to a local jazz club if we have an extra day. That's definitely on my list. Would you consider doing a master class while in Shanghai? No, no, no. I'm not the master class type. I'll take a master class before I give one. I'm still trying to learn myself. I would just like to hear the music that other people are doing. Can you give us a sneak peek into your plans for your show here? Well, it'll just have really good music and a great band. I'm just really looking forward to the show and just playing some great jazz that everybody will really love.
