The Sailors' Fish and Chips: The New Dining Star on Yongkang Lu

Chef Brad Turley told us it was happening in his column last issue, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. Shanghai’s dining scene is currently being fleshed out by a whole host of entrepreneurial foodies looking to share their finest wares, and The Sailors, on the booming section of Yongkang Lu between Xiangyang Lu and Jiashan Lu, is a prime example.

Set up and run by three enterprising Fudan graduates who saw a hole in the market and opened shop after learning to make fish and chips online, it’s already regularly packed with diners sitting on the stools and wooden crates which serve as seats. They’ve kept things basic here; it’s all fish and chips-centric and all affordable. Their basic flounder meal starts at just RMB30, and the “big set,” featuring a piece each of their flounder, pollack and sea bass and filled out with chips and a mountain of deep-fried shrimp, scallops and calimari rings, is RMB88. We’d recommend it if you’re dining with one other; you can even pair it with six Stellas for just RMB70 more. Our favorite item is the juicy sea bass (RMB42), but all the options here are fried to a fluffy golden-brown and served with a generous serving of delightful fresh-cut fries and homemade tartar sauce (RMB25 a bottle if you’re looking to take it home).

Delicious fried goodness. Amusingly small serving of peas, though.

Finally! A fish and chip shop in Shanghai. Doesn't quite look like the ones we have in AUS, but it successfully fills the void..
