Flying Chef is a Shanghai-based service where you can book an experienced Chinese chef to cook in your home for private dinners and events. We caught up with Li Maosheng, the head chef, to find out about the benefits of ordering a Flying Chef.

What’s Flying Chef?
We’re a private catering service that sends chefs to cook in your kitchen, for dinner parties or really any occasion. Guests book us online or over the phone and tell us what dishes they would like to have from our menu and how many people will show up, and we take care of everything else from there. We do the shopping, prep work, cooking, serving and, last but not least, we clean up the guests’ kitchens before we leave. The dishes we do are Chinese, but we make them palatable to foreigners as well. Classics like spring rolls and Peking duck are big favorites.

And how did you become the Flying Chef?
I befriended a Swiss man by chance. I was invited to his place to show his friends some real Chinese cooking and they all liked it. That was around 2007, and both of us realized that there was definitely a demand for this.

What’s the best part of the job?
I think it’s the ultimate reward of seeing and hearing people express their gratitude and satisfaction. I love receiving “Thank you!” e-mails from customers.
