Need to get out some aggression or just want to do a triple axel or two? Ice hockey might just be the sport for you. We talked to Calvin Wong about the Shanghai hockey scene and what it's like playing for Team Canada.
What’s the competitive hockey scene like here?
The league now has over 120 members on eight teams, and the competition varies from beginners to those who have played semi-pro. Most people think it’s a North American, male-dominated sport, but over here we have players from over 14 countries, ages 14-65, and there are one or two women in the league each year. It’s a great way to promote the game here because it allows everyone to participate. At some point it might be necessary to have two divisions to help beginners develop quicker.
Who won last year?
My team, the Gentlemen Broncos! We’ve held the playoffs up in Nanjing the past few years; we play Saturday and Sunday and party for two nights. The parties are always highlights.
Is there a showcase game here we can come watch?
Last year we cooperated with the Canadian Chamber and started Hockey Night in Shanghai, which pitted players from Canada against the best from the rest of the world. We got 300 spectators out. It was a great start to an annual event and we plan on making it bigger next year.
Did Canada win?
Yeah, we did. I think the score was 4-2.
Want to use this chance to gloat?
Tempting, but I don’t think we need to rub it in. There will be a lot of talented new additions to the World Team this year. Come check it out and we’ll just let the results do the talking.
