For those who've been living under a rock, what exactly is Pilates? It's a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates. The Pilates method helps develop a balanced, healthy body by building core strength and flexibility and works to lengthen the spine and develop lean muscles. We've seen a medieval-looking torture machine in a lot of Pilates studios. What is that? The "torture" machine is called a Cadillac, and can be used for a variety of exercises such as assisted roll downs, legs in springs series, pull-ups, teasers and much more. So it's not used for torture? Some clients may think it's torture, but depending on the exercise and apparatus, the springs either assist you or challenge you in performing the exercise. So how'd you get into Pilates? I'm also a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer and I'm always looking for new exercises to help my clients reach their goals. I took some Pilates classes on my own and I really liked it. So, I decided to become certified to teach Mat Pilates and then Power Pilates with an apparatus. I also have continued to develop my skills by attending the Polestar Certification Program. I really like their philosophy. Yoga has seemed to make inroads in Shanghai, has Pilates enjoyed the same success? Pilates has a promising future in Shanghai. Yoga opportunities are abundant, but then again yoga dates back to 1,000-5,000 B.C.–Joseph Pilates didn't open his first studio in New York until 1926, and then he mainly worked with ballet dancers. I think the main reason yoga has taken off faster here is that it has been around much longer. Pilates promises a lot, can it really deliver? Pilates can most definitely provide the positive benefits, but it is up to you! The key is consistency. You have to do it more than once a week.
