Anna Ronngard | Gaelic Football
So we have to ask, what exactly is Gaelic football? That is everyone's first question! Not many people outside of Ireland have a clue about the sport. Phew. Basically it's a game where a team must kick, hand pass, bounce (hop) and solo–bounce off the foot–a round football. A round football? It's kind of like a soccer ball and we play on soccer-sized pitches with seven people on a side. What are some of the most important moves for Gaelic football? The post-session drills are arguably most important, as we emphasize a pint at the Blarney Stone. That's the kind of club we like. Are there other Gaelic football teams around? We recently returned from the All-China Games in Beijing. How'd you do? We made it all the way to the finals, but we unfortunately lost to a strong Beijing A team. During the summer, we'll be practicing hard for the Asian Games in October in Penang, Malaysia. There will be strong teams from around Asia there so we will have to be on our game. Are there any characteristics you look for in a new player? Absolutely anyone can be a Gaelic football player. Come on, we can take it. I suppose to be a good Gaelic footballer you should be fast and fit, with good ballskills and be up for a massive night after a game. Of course, to take the next step in authenticity, it probably helps if you pronounce your "th's" like "t's" and love your potatoes. Shoot, we might not make the team then. So what would you do if you moved to a city without a Gaelic football team? Anywhere with an Irishman, there's a Gaelic football team, so it shouldn't be a problem. You're Irish? Actually, I'm Swedish so I guess I should go back to knitting and being a Viking.
