Hola, Shanghai!
Martha Machler | Mexican | Homemaker
CW: Can you describe your community for us?
Martha Machler: The Mexican Comunity is quite small compared to other expat comunities in Shanghai, though it's doubled over the last two years. There are 600 Mexicans registered at the Consulate. Many are students who come to study Mandarin through exchange programs. Most of the older Mexicans in town are established here with their families and working.
What do you like best about this community?
Geographically, Mexico is really far from China. It's nice to be able to share with people who can relate. We share our Mexican cuisine and recipes, exchange books and share all kinds of advice about our unique finds in the city.
What kind of community activities are there and how are you involved?
Our community is affiliated with the Latin women's group Latinas in Shanghai. We organize a monthly lunch at different restaurants. I also participate in reading and photography activities. For example, the ladies of the group wrote a book, Shanghai desde mi Ventana (Shanghai from My Window), sharing their experiencies in the city. Mostly I help newcomers by replying to their questions and organizing lunches, dinners and strolls around the city.
What's one thing everyone should know about the Mexican community in Shanghai?
Family is very important for all Mexicans. We're open to all those willing to learn more about our country, customs, cuisine and culture and also to all those wanting to practice their Spanish!
What within your community has really helped you in your life here in Shanghai?
I thought it would be very difficult to adjust, especially because of the language. But thanks to the help of my compatriots, my life here has started in the best way possible.
