NEW BARS: The Irishman's Pub (Century Park)
All in the Name
Although located in the "far reaches" of Thumb Plaza in Pudong, this aptly named Irish pub adds some new life to a family oriented, chain restaurant dominated area. We found the bar sitting in a quieter corner of Thumb Plaza with a mini patio which piqued our interest. We thought that this bar was more than the typical pub, but once inside, we realized this bar is exactly as the name suggests--an Irish pub. There was a mature expat crowd inside looking for a piece of home. The pool table fits the traditional atmosphere, and the bar owner bares a striking resemblance to the popular image of a barkeep in a comforting, family-run pub--Victorian picture of a family hanging on the wall included. Although we did notice that no one was having a meal around dinner time, the bar's Caribbean Coffee with dark rum (￥60) and Margarita (￥55) justified their prices--both were delicious, strong, and made with experienced hands.

At first, this pub seemed like a perfect place for my brother, fiance, and I to spend our evening relaxing, having a few beers, and snacks. After we ordered our second round of drinks, we were confronted by the owner and told we would not be served a second round because we looked 'young' and 'this is not the type of establishment' the owner was trying to run. We offered ID's to prove our ages, and were still denied. My fiance, brother, and I are all of legal age to drink in ANY country and being denied service was disrespectful and horrid. The worst part is, some fathers and their children were sitting across the bar from us; the father's completely drunk and their children looking on...in the same establishment where we 'young' people were denied service. I have lived in Shanghai for a year now and never, ever have I been denied service of any kind. The unkindness of the owner of this bar establishes the fact that neither my family or friends will never ever because of this situation. We love Thumb Plaza, but definetely not this pub. Even their drinks were horrible and over-priced... All and all, a TERRIBLE experience.
