Shanhai Livehouse: A Refuge for Raucous Ravers

Serious musicians and educated listeners applaud the arrival of this venue―it has the connections and drive to bring in big Chinese and Western bands and DJs. The mid-sized venue holds 400 raucous moshers bumping and girating as they did at Boys Noize on Oct. 28. The stage is the main attraction here, with a bar in back serving cheap beers and cocktails (RMB20-40), a recording studio upstairs and a refuge for fans who prefer a personal bubble. There’s plenty of room in the corridor to step out for breath of fresh air or throw up in a potted plant if the music so moves you.

Our rating: 4/5
